Role ContextUK-German Connection is a bilateral government initiative for school and youth links between the two countries. UK-German Connection is dedicated to supporting partnerships and exchanges, offering intercultural opportunities, and facilitating connections between schools, youth groups and young people in the UK and Germany. UK-German Connection works in collaboration with partner agencies in Germany; the UK office is hosted by the British Council as its accountable organisation.
Role PurposeThe Consultant will be responsible for managing the Communications and Monitoring & Evaluation strand of UK-German Connection activity. This includes:
- Maintaining and enhancing UK-German Connection's visibility amongst stakeholders, partners and customers and relevant sector audiences
- showcasing and celebrating successful UK-German partnerships and exchanges
- providing a platform (first port-of-call) for UK-German opportunities to raise awareness of opportunities and encourage participation and engagement
- reporting on activity, engagement and impact for stakeholder awareness
- aligning and complementing bilateral UK-German Connection activity with British Council Communications and M&E.
Main Accountabilities Communications:
- Manage UK-German Connection communications, including project-related outreach, materials, storytelling and events.
- Coordinate communications updates across the team and all UK-German Connection activity.
- Assess project activity and feedback for showcasing purposes.
- Coordinate UK-German Connection's overall web presence and social media accounts, and produce relevant and compelling digital content, including images and video.
- Support the development and visibility of a new digital offer.
- Manage UK-German Connection's attendance at external events.
- Manage relevant customer, partner and stakeholder contacts.
Customer Service:
- Consistently provide high quality service to all customers, minimising mistakes at each stage of the programme/project cycle.
- Tailor customer service activities to customer needs and circumstances and engage in an open and supportive dialogue.
- Acknowledge and respond to enquiries within agreed timescales and to a high communication standard. Ensure through cross-functional work that consistent messages are delivered to applicants and participants.
- Manage delivery of customer enquiry mailboxes.
Monitoring & Evaluation (M&E):
- Manage evaluation and reporting according to stakeholder needs, including British Council-internal reporting and evaluation reports for the bilateral UK-German Connection Steering Group.
- Coordinate M&E updates across the team and all UK-German Connection activity.
- Contribute to the development of stakeholder and external reporting.
- Manage relevant customer, partner and stakeholder contacts.
Programme and Project Management:
- Oversee the life cycles of projects and events to ensure work is delivered on time and to a high standard. This includes general administration, communication and correspondence with partners, briefings, logistics (where applicable), facilitating events and workshops, review of reports, and post-activity follow-up.
- Manage project/event data, records and finances and keep relevant systems up-to-date.
- Evaluate the quality, reach and impact of activity for reporting purposes and to inform strategic reviews and development.
Business Assurance, sustainability and efficiency:
- Review, improve and implement the business processes and systems for delivering UK-German Connection programmes ensuring quality standards are efficient and in line with corporate, Cultural Engagement, and stakeholder requirements.
Team Membership and Contribution:- Actively contribute to own performance planning, management and review processes, and engage in continuous learning and professional development.
- Support the delivery of operational plans for own area of work.
- Ensure professionalism is demonstrated in your area and client needs and perspectives are reflected in your behaviours and focus.

Requirements of the roleMinimum/essential- Experience of schools and youth sectors
- Experience of embedding process/system improvements to increase efficiency levels or deliver increased value for money
- Experience of working in a busy, target driven environment to deliver high quality products and services
- Intercultural competence and awareness, particularly of the UK and Germany; intercultural communication skills
- Effective interpersonal, communication and influencing skills (including with international customers and stakeholders)
- Strong customer service approach and experience of providing advice and guidance
- Aptitude and willingness to learn and acquire new skills and an active interest in development and innovation
- Ability to work both independently and cooperatively as a team member
- Sound IT knowledge and ability to use IT systems. Delivering products and services in line with agreed standards including through SharePoint, Teams and shared Outlook Mailboxes
- Excellent data management skills and high levels of attention to detail and accuracy
Desirable- Effective analytical skills: able to collate and interpret multiple data sets, validate, analyse and use data to make recommendations and inform decision-making.
- Coordinating and facilitating workshops and events
- Knowledge of issues affecting mobility and partnerships between the UK and Germany
- Knowledge of safe-guarding principles and practices
- Experience of website- editing (esp. Wordpress), content-management and/or CRM systems
- Experience with design software (e.g. Canva or InDesign)
- Aptitude to 'write for impact' and excellent editing and proofing skills
Language RequirementCompetence at C2 level in English and C1 (min. B2) level in German
Additional InformationThere will be occasional evening and weekend work as well as occasional travel within the UK and to Germany.
