Now, we're looking for a committed and inspiring academic to join our School of History, Politics and Philosophy as a Lecturer in Modern German History.
About the Role
This is a 0.5 FTE, fixed-term post for 24 months, made possible by a Leverhulme Research Fellowship. You'll play a key role in teaching and developing modules in modern German and European history, with a strong emphasis on issues of identity, conflict, and social change.
You will lead two existing undergraduate modules:
- Holocaust History (Second-Year) - An 11-week module focused on the rise of antisemitism, the development of the 'Final Solution', Nazi persecution, and Jewish resistance.
- A Queer History of the 20th Century (Final-Year) - An 11-week comparative module exploring the invention of hetero/homosexuality, the impact of war and revolution on LGBTQ+ communities, legal reform, the 'sexual revolution', and the HIV/AIDS crisis, with case studies including Germany and beyond.
In addition, you will contribute to:
- A first-year module on the First World War
- A second-year module on the Second World War, with a focus on gender and sexuality
- Supervision of final-year undergraduate dissertations in modern German history and the history of gender and sexuality
While this is a teaching-focused post, we actively encourage and support engagement with one of our Faculty's research groups, including:
- Histories of RGSI (Race, Gender, Sexuality and Identity)
- HACC (Histories and Cultures of Conflict)
About You
We're looking for someone who is:
- Passionate about teaching and student engagement
- Knowledgeable in modern German history, with a strong grasp of the Holocaust, gender, and sexuality in historical context
- Experienced in delivering inclusive, research-informed teaching
- Committed to contributing to a collaborative academic community
If you are enthusiastic about using history to challenge, inspire and connect with students, and if you share our values of equality, creativity and making a difference-you could be a perfect fit for our team.
For informal enquiries about the post should be addressed to Dr Craig Griffiths (

We support a range of flexible working arrangements, including hybrid and tailored schedules, which can be discussed with your line manager. If you require reasonable adjustments during the recruitment process or in your role, please let us know so we can provide appropriate support.
Our commitment to inclusivity includes mentoring programmes, accessibility resources, and professional development opportunities to empower and support underrepresented groups.
